ICMP / LOIC pinging attacks
« on: January 25, 2012, 02:49:28 AM »
I've had the misfortune of having to deal with players on my server following through with "Revenge" attacks after the playerbase !votemuted or even banned certain griefers/trolls.  The attacks didn't crash the server exactly, but made it unplayable by increasing the latency of all clients, and the microphone channels lagging out as well.  I don't even know where to begin in trying to manage these kinds of attacks.  I know its not a easy thing to do.  Is there any way for you, the server hosts, to block these kinds of attacks?  Wasn't sure if I had to set up a ticket or just setup a general discussion about this.  I can give whoever's concerned my TCadmin username , and the date/time where the attacks happened via PM.

Is there really nothing that can be done about this?  I know some server providers have their own DDoS protection methods and are pretty good about rerouting attacks.  Really interested to know what Jestservers does about these sorts of situations.

I do not know of a GSP with better DDOS protection than us, if you know of one please let me know.
With that being said, any service can be brought down with a large enough attack force.
LOIC makes the news constantly along with other DDoS attacks bringing down the largest sites on the internet(even those with CDN and multiple redundancy/ddos proxy protection.
DDoS Protection via proxy isn't used for gaming services(that I've seen) as it increases latency and generally start at 8 times the monthly price for basic protection.
Each datacenter we are colocated at uses all available tools to prevent downtime, with on site 24/7 staff available to do their best.
Let me know what you think.
