Server Location Moves
« on: July 05, 2010, 10:45:22 PM »
Hello there. I'm rather new to Jestservers. At the moment I'm providing a Mount and Blade: Warband server for the clan I'm in. The unfortunate thing about Mount and Blade is pings are a bit more sensitive than in other games and effect things quite a bit more ( I don't know if you play it yourself or not.) So...i'm trying to find the best location for our clan. At the moment I use Chicago as that is more centered than the rest of your servers in the U.S. Unfortunately, one particular member from California gets terrible ping on the Chicago server (Amusingly, he gets the same amount of ping as one of our members in Northern Ireland....Probably because he uses Comcast XD) while on our previous server (provided by a different member) in the location of Dallas he had much less ping (oddly, the northern Irishman also had better ping on the server than in the Chicago one. He could of bought a core upgrade though). So, I'm wanting to try a different location. I was wondering how I go about this? If this is something in the TCadmin panel that i use or if its a ticket I submit?

PS. Would buying a core amount upgrade significantly help pings? (i know it doesn't always work like that for everyone's internet, just talking in theory)

PPS: (Sorry for asking so many questions) I was looking at the FAQ for how to set up a clan donation account. Is that account suppose to have the same e-mail as my master account? or a different one? I tried to put it the same one but it said it was already in use, so i'm assuming I just use an alternate e-mail of mine?

Thanks and sorry for the wall of text

hey, don't apologise for all those questions. i'm pretty sure plenty of people will have the the exact same ones.

in the gaming industry, server locations are divided geographically. GENERALLY speaking, if you want the 'best of both worlds' (ie, decent ping from both sides of the coast), then yes, chicago OR dallas are your best options. chicago, traditionally, has always been best for people who live in the north and east, while dallas tends to favour people for the west and south. this will explain why your california member pings better to dallas than to chicago (the fact that the northern ireland guy gets better ping to dallas is a bit of an anomaly, but routing is known to do strange things to ping). as far as i am aware, you cannot change your game server location in tcadmin.

if you haven't already, send a support ticket for this kind of move.

as for cores, they generally will not help in terms of ping/latency. however, a dedicated core will help with server performance dramatically.

i'm not sure about clan donations, so i'll let someone else field that one.

i hope this clarified a few things. if you still have questions, don't hesitate to ask.
